The Leaning Pile of Books is a feature in which I highlight books I got over the last week that sound like they may be interesting—old or new, bought or received in the mail for review consideration (the latter of which are mainly unsolicited books from publishers). Today I’m delighted to welcome fantasy and science fiction author Fran Wilde! Her debut novel, Updraft, won the Andre Norton Award, received the Compton Crook Award, and was a finalist for the Nebula Award for Best Novel. She’s also the author of several short stories and the novelette “The Jewel and Her Lapidary,” a finalist for both this year’s Hugo Award […]

It was released before a prequel novella, Book of Iron, about the same protagonist during her adventuring days many years ago. Although it’s not absolutely necessary to do so, I am glad I read Book of Iron first since it provides more […]
Today I’m giving away An Apprentice to Elves by Elizabeth Bear and Sarah Monette! The third Iskryne book, which follows A Companion to Wolves and The Tempering of Men, was just released yesterday. I enjoyed the first two books in this series, especially A Companion to Wolves, and both authors have written some of my favorite fantasy books: Sarah Monette’s Doctrine of Labyrinths series and The Goblin Emperor (as Katherine Addison) and Elizabeth Bear’s Edda of Burdens trilogy, Range of […]
